Book Exchange Boxes and Little Free Libraries

Have you discovered the awesomeness of Book Exchange Boxes? I only learned about their existence a few months ago, but ever since then I've been scouring the area for every one that I can find!

The concept is simple. Someone places a box outside their home or business and fills it with books. These books are available, free of charge, to anyone who wants to take them home. Ideally you ought to replace any books you take with some that you no longer want to keep. This way there is always a supply of books ready for anyone who wants to read. Some boxes have material for all different ages, some tend to have books more for adults or more for children. Of course this can change at any time due to who visits and what they leave behind.
Most of the book boxes in our area are affiliated with the Little Free Library program. This makes it easy to look up the boxes on a map and find the one(s) closest to where you live or where you'll be on any given day. Not all the boxes are registered with LFL though, some are just owned and cared for by individuals who love books and want to share with their community. These ones can be harder to track down, so if you know of any I missed, let me know and I'll add it to the list.
I know I am missing a book box out in Dayton, and another up in South Lake Tahoe. When I get a chance to visit these they'll go on the list as well. There's also a TON listed with Little Free Library up in the Reno area, so if you visit there you could check those out too. Let us know in the comments here, or on the Carson City Family Facebook or Instagram pages if you find any great boxes I don't have listed here.

Carson City:
3379 Coloma Dr. (Independent)
This box is super cute and easy to spot from the road. There was a good mix of kid and adult books when we visited. Plus it's near James Lee Park, which is one of our favorites, so you could get a free book and have a park day!

1111 W College Pkwy (Little Free Library)
This box is located immediately outside the gates of the Sierra Place Assisted Living Facility. There is no street side parking here, so unless you want to park in the Sierra Place driveway and hope nobody comes, your best bet is to park behind the old K-Mart building and walk the short distance up the road to the book box.
104 Mountain St. (Independent)
This box is located right before Mountain Street dead-ends into King St, in front of Bordewich Bray Elementary School. It's a small box, but you never know what you'll find. As far as parking, you can find street-side parking nearby on both Mountain and King streets.

1308 W. Washington St. (Little Free Library)
This is the largest book exchange box I have seen in our area so far, and it is chock full of books for all ages. Street-side parking is available right by the box.
69 Ruby Lane (Independent)
This was a good sized box, easily visible from the road with a nice place to park right in front of it.

Lake Tahoe:
1109 Oak Ave, South Lake Tahoe (Little Free Library)
This book exchange box was a little hard to find, but only because my phone had me turn right when I should have turned left. :) Follow the house numbers and you'll be fine.
980 Incline Way, Incline Village (Little Free Library)
Located near the front entrance to the Incline Village Recreation Center, this box is pretty easy to find. Park in the parking lot and just follow the sidewalk up to the main entrance.

Genoa:
2299 Main St. (Little Free Library)
Located on the front porch of the Genoa Country Store, this box is pretty easy to find. It is a good sized box with a good mix of books.

Gardnerville/Minden:

1756 Ironwood Drive, Minden NV (Little Free Library)
This library is really cute, and even has a nice little bench to sit on. I felt it was a little harder to spot because it was so near the front door of the home instead of out by the curb, but as long as you know what street address you're looking for you shouldn't have any problems.
1477 US Hwy 395, Gardnerville NV (Little Free Library)
This book box is on the campus of the Carson Valley Middle School, in the quad area by the door to the school library. When we visited it was a Saturday and we didn't have any problem accessing the box, but I would imagine that when school is in session you probably can't just wander around the campus.
1290 Toler Gardnerville NV (Little Free Library)
Located in front of the Gardnerville Elementary School, this box is pretty easy to get to. I don't think there would be any problem accessing it during school hours as it is right out front by the parking lot.
1283 Centerville Lane, Gardnerville NV (Little Free Library)
This box is located a little ways back from the road, and can be easy to miss as it's right on a large curve in Centerville Lane. This box is unique in that it's a re-purposed newspaper box. When we visited it didn't have a large selection, and wasn't very weather-tight. We left a good-sized pile of books to help build their selection, but this one needs more visitors.
