Mormon Station State Park - Genoa

We love the little town of Genoa, Nevada and find every excuse we can to head that direction. While the town actually has several fun shops, eateries, a park, and more to enjoy, I think it would be safe to say the main attraction is Mormon Station State Park.
This state park isn't huge, but it is a great spot and has some interesting history behind it. Among other interesting facts, did you know that Mormon Station was the first permanent non-native settlement in the state? Currently it is a nice green space at the edge of the desert where visitors can picnic, tour the tiny museum, and soak up the history. Access to the park is free, but the museum does charge a small fee.
The Museum here is quite small, but is jam packed with a lot of really interesting historical tidbits. With admission only being a couple of dollars per person, it's pretty affordable family fun too!
Outside the museum there are public restrooms (they were clean and in good repair when we visited, but there isn't a diaper changing station), drinking fountains, plenty of picnic tables with grills, and some historical displays.
Make sure you take time to wander into the stockade to check out the vintage machinery and the little fish pond. There is plenty of room to run in there, as well as picnic facilities.

Outside you have a large green space under the shade of some great old trees. There is a large group area (advance reservation required) as well as individual picnic areas.
As with many of the state parks, Mormon Station hosts some fun events throughout the year. The one that we loved the most so far was their Independence Day celebration. It was SO much fun and just oozing with Americana goodness! Free live music and family games, yummy food, and lots of fun! If you're in the area in July you should really check it out. We're almost sure to be there too!
