Snow Day Survival Kit

Like everyone else around here we have had a huge amount of snow (for here anyways) with quite a few missed school-days due to the weather. Since I'm sure I can't be the only mom around here who is running out of ways to keep the kids busy while stuck inside, I decided to put together a Snow Day Survival Kit for you all. Now, as much as I'd love to hand out baskets with warm gloves, cozy blankets, and mugs of hot cocoa, that's a little hard to do via the internet. Logistics dictate that I go for a more digital route. :) So, here is your very own survival kit.

With this list of supplies you will have everything you need to keep your kids busy for days, and you should have many (possibly MOST) of them already in your house. The list looks a little long but as it includes things like "water" and "junk mail" I think you can handle it. If you have a question about any supply item, click on it and it will take you to Amazon to see exactly what I'm talking about. While you can buy them directly from Amazon, many of them are cheaper at Dollar Tree, so it's worth a stop there to check stuff out.

Pantry/Kitchen Items:
water

Household Supplies:
eyedropper/syringe/pipettes
liquid soap (dish soap, baby shampoo, whatever)
junk mail/newspaper/misc recyclables

Craft Supplies:

Okay, now that you've gathered your supplies, you need to know how to use them. I'll share the first idea right here in this post, but in order to keep things from getting too crazy, the rest will be in links below. Have fun!

Snowy Sensory Bin:
One super fun way to enjoy a snow day without going out in the cold is to bring the snow in to you! Grab whatever container you have handy (we went nuts and used a kiddie pool, but you could use a mixing bowl, cookie sheet, cake pan, etc) and fill it up with snow. Bring it inside and give the kids spoons, cups, sand toys, any other water resistant toys, etc to play with. This alone should keep them busy for a while!
Now, if you want to take the excitement level up a notch, put some food coloring and water into some cups and give them eye droppers or syringes (the little ones that come with children's medicines work pretty well). They can "paint" the snow while building their fine-motor skills at the same time! When you're done just dump all the mess right back outside, throw any wet toys in the tub or sink to dry, and you're done! Easy Peasy and (if your kids are like mine) you just got a solid 1-2 hours of content kiddos.
