I was looking back through some pictures and realized that somehow our trip to the Carson River Park back in the Autumn never made it here on the blog. I'm not really sure how that happened, but I'm here today to get that fixed because this a great place to take your family!
Located just a little ways past Silver Saddle Ranch, the entrance to this park is right before the bridge over the river. There's plenty of parking space, an outhouse, and a couple of picnic tables.
There is a ramp to launch boats into the river right by the bridge, or if you head down to the far end of the parking lot you can get on the Pasture River Loop of the Mexican Ditch Trail. This trail is wide and flat enough for bikes or sturdy strollers. It runs alongside the river, sometimes under the shade of the trees and sometimes in the sage brush.
Not far up the trail is a little observation platform that lets you look out right over the water. The kids loved it!
We hiked for a ways, I'm not sure exactly how far, before we cut through the brush to get to the river bank. We found a nice sand bank to bask in the sun and throw rocks in the water. Our 7 year old was pretty excited to ;
learn how to skip rocks for the first time!
If you hike the trail its full length it's about 1.5 miles to the Mexican Dam, which diverts water into the irrigation ditch the trail is named for. We didn't make it to the dam, but maybe this summer we will!
