Kids To Parks Day - Silver Saddle Ranch - Carson City

This was our second year attending Kids to Parks Day here in Carson City. It was a fun family outing both times! Kids To Parks Day is a nation-wide celebration sponsored by the National Parks Trust, and happens the third Saturday of May every year. Missed it this year? It will be back next year!

Silver Saddle Ranch is a working ranch owned by Carson City. It serves as a nature preserve, an educational setting, and a recreational opportunity. There are hiking trails along the river and up to Prison Hill (though we haven't hiked them yet). It is a really neat little spot!
Okay, let's talk about what actually happens during Kids To Parks Day. There are booths set up to educate children/families about a variety of topics. We got to see/touch animal furs and skulls. We got to learn about vermiculture (composting with worms) and even bring some worms home along with veggie seedlings for our garden. We got to learn about pollinators/bees and taste some yummy honey.

We learned about green energy and got to use pedal power to light up a variety of types of light bulbs. There were raffles (no money required to enter) for fun prizes, and guided hikes along the trails at the park. There were even a few food vendors there in case you needed some lunch or a snow cone.

By far our favorite part of this year's experience was the horse-drawn wagon ride. We had to get on the waiting list, but the ride was free. When it was our turn the kids were so excited! Our oldest even got to sit up front with the driver. It was a fun way to see more of the ranch in a really unique way.
