Nevada Outdoor Experience 2018, Capitol City Gun Club - Carson City

We are always on the lookout for family-friendly things to do in and around Carson City. I'm constantly scouring the internet and other sources trying to find the next fun thing to put on our calendar. Even so, we almost didn't hear about the Nevada Outdoor Experience, but I'm so glad we did! What an amazing (FREE!) event for families and kids of all ages! I love that they do this every year, and I can't wait to take our kids back next time!
The rock climbing wall was a HUGE hit with our two older kids. The 2-year-old wasn't heavy enough (minimum weight was 30lbs), but she would have probably beaten her siblings to the top given the chance.

This event is created to inspire kids to love the outdoors and all the amazing things in the world around them. There were tons of booths with great hands-on activities for the kids to try, to give them a taste of what waits for them out there in the great outdoors.

Panning for gold! They didn't let the kids keep their gold flecks, but they still had a blast anyways!
In addition to just having a ton of fun, our kids came home with SO much free stuff. Hats, shoulder bags, duck calls, coloring books, and so much more. They were THRILLED with all the treasures.
Checking out skulls and skins of various animals. There were these ones they could touch, as well as animal mounts that were just for looking at.
In addition to all the free stuff and the great activities, the kids also got raffle tickets (also free) to enter into several different raffles for some great prizes from Cabella's and Sportsman's Warehouse. We didn't win, but we also didn't have to spend any money, so that's okay. :)
Watching a demonstration about wilderness survival. Among other things they got to see an elk call in action. They were suitably impressed. :)
One of the things that I really loved about the day was that everyone there worked so hard to make it fun for every kid, of every age. The presenters didn't have any problem with getting down on the ground to help out our 2-year-old, and showed just as much enthusiasm for her as for our older kids. If that doesn't make a mom's heart happy, I don't know what would.
Trying her hand at metal detecting. Each kid got to find a couple of items and pick their favorite to bring home. Mostly it was coins, but there were a few other little trinkets in there as well.
Parking was a little tight at the Capitol City Gun Club for this event, so next year we'll probably try to get there right as it starts so we don't have to fight for a spot or walk so far. This will also help beat the heat, though it really wasn't too bad. Also, I believe the only "facilities" available were the porta-potties set up at the edge of the parking lot. I don't know how well your kids handle using those, but mine won't go anywhere near them, so bear that in mind.
"Milking" a cow (it was actually water, but I don't think the kids noticed).
One thing about the day that made Mom and Dad extra happy was that each attendee was given a ticket for a free lunch! Hooray for free food, am I right?! Each person got a hot dog, a bag of chips, and a drink (water, soda, juice). It wasn't a huge meal, but for the price you won't hear us complain! They were pretty tasty hot dogs too! There were dining areas both indoors and outdoors, so you could pick your preferred location and enjoy the chance to sit and relax.
Archery! Even the littlest toddler in our family got a chance to try her hand with the bow. I'm not sure any of our kids hit any targets, but it was fun just to try it out.
What an incredible way to spend a day with your family! I can't wait to go back next year!
